IATF transitional audits

IATF transitional audits: From ISO/TS 16949:2009 to IATF 16949

The transition to IATF 16949:2016 entails a necessary adaptation of the ISO/TS 16949 standard, which is practically geared to the specific needs and requirements of the automotive branch. This transition of ISO/TS 16949 goes together with some important innovations and changes.

After October 01, 2017 solely certifications pursuant to IATF 16949 are still an option. Audits according to ISO/TS 16949 are no more possible. The validity of the previous ISO/TS 16949 certificates ceases to exist by September 14, 2018 at the latest.

The present quality management system will need to be checked during the required IATF transitional audit while all the changes correlating to the revision of the standard need to be taken into account. Documents will have to be checked as well.

Significant aspects of the transition to IATF 16949

IATF 16949 is finally adapted to ISO 9001 through this conversion. More precisely speaking, it is adjusted to the ISO 9001:2015 revision. A process-oriented certification procedure is supposed to concentrate more strongly on customer satisfaction. The focus is on planning and error prevention, which are supposed to lower long-term risks and thus, costs. Retraceability is supposed to be purposefully reinforced at all times and suppliers are supposed to be integrated more closely into the processes of the company. As the transition to 2016 is very specifically geared to the automotive industry, products with embedded software are also focused on.

Above all, risk analysis is reinforced in the context of the transition to IATF 2016 in order to achieve the planned aims. There shall be more systematic regulations on dealing with risks and the approach is supposed to be realized in a manner that is as much cross-company as possible. This strengthens the efficiency of the quality management system and managers are more strongly integrated, too.

But in the context of standard conversion, IATF 16949 is also going to share in a superordinate high level structure with 10 segments, which is supposed to simplify the long-term adaptation and integration of different standards in the company. Thus, efforts and costs for planning and implementation are going to be lowered.
