Quality management for aerospace and defence
In aerospace, quality determines safety. Anyone supplying components, assemblies or services for aircraft, helicopters, space systems or defence programmes needs a quality management system that demonstrably meets the specific requirements of the industry. PeRoBa® Unternehmensberatung GmbH supports you from the initial status assessment to certification readiness – practically and following the principle of help for self-help.
The industry standards: EN 9100, EN 9110 and EN 9120
- EN 9100:2018 (German edition DIN EN 9100:2018-08) – for organisations that design and manufacture aviation, space and defence products.
- EN 9110:2018 (DIN EN 9110:2018-08) – for aviation maintenance organisations.
- EN 9120:2018 (DIN EN 9120:2018-08) – for aviation, space and defence distributors and stockists.
Certificates are listed internationally in the OASIS database of the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG). Many manufacturers and system integrators in the industry require their suppliers to be certified to these standards.
What EN 9100 requires beyond ISO 9001
EN 9100 contains ISO 9001 in full and supplements it with industry-specific requirements, including:
- product safety and configuration management
- prevention of counterfeit parts
- control of operational risks
- first article inspection according to EN 9102 and key characteristics
- human factors
- supplier monitoring and on-time delivery
If you are already certified to ISO 9001, you have a good basis. However, the gap to EN 9100 is usually larger than many expect. Methods such as FMEA and advanced product quality planning (APQP) help to implement the additional requirements effectively.
Outlook: the IA9100 series of standards
The IAQG is revising the series of standards. The successors are to be published as IA9100, IA9110 and IA9120 and have been announced for 2026. To our knowledge (end of October 2026), they have not yet been published, and no transition period has been set. Until then, the 2018 editions remain unchanged. We will inform you as soon as content and deadlines are binding.
Defence: NATO requirements
For contracts with the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr), NATO’s quality requirements – the Allied Quality Assurance Publications (AQAP) – are regularly part of the contract; depending on the risk, government quality assurance is added. A quality management system according to EN 9100 is a sound basis for this. We show you which additional requirements your contract sets.

Frequently asked questions about EN 9100
Do I need EN 9100 if I am already certified to ISO 9001?
If your aerospace customers require it: yes. ISO 9001 is part of EN 9100, but on its own it is not sufficient.
What is the difference between EN 9100, EN 9110 and EN 9120?
EN 9100 applies to design and manufacturing, EN 9110 to maintenance organisations and EN 9120 to distributors and stockists.
Should I wait for IA9100?
No. Until publication, the 2018 editions apply. Organisations implementing now can transition later with manageable effort.
How long does implementation take?
That depends on your starting point. In a free, no-obligation initial consultation we give you a realistic estimate of the effort.
